Material Boy- A true love story

There is nothing I love more than listening to stories about how people met and fell in love. Yes I know, I am a sucker for romance! One story that I absolutely love is that of David and his husband PJ and I was so excited when they agreed to tell me all about how they met and their amazing wedding. You may recognise David from his fantastic blog “Material Boy” If you don’t already follow him on social media then I want you to take 5 minutes before reading this to go and follow him, he will bring daily doses of fun and positivity into your life and of course major style inspo!

So sit back and enjoy their romantic story as told by Material Boy himself.

How they met.

PJ and I met in the Half Moon Nightclub over 15 years ago. I felt he’s eyes on me from across the room and we started chatting and we fell in love instantly. The rest is history as they say!

The Proposal.

Both of us are not very romantic so there wasn’t any huge surprise! We both discussed that would get married and we bought our engagement rings in Mexico while on holiday. We then flew to Vegas and and we planned on going to see Cher. On the night of the concert we both got down on one knee and said will you marry me at the same time and simply said I Do together. No can you get any gayer than that?

A Destination Wedding.

We both knew and felt getting married abroad would suit us better and be more to our standards. We wanted something elaborate and unique with a stunning setting in the mountains and that’s exactly what we’re got.

The Venue.

Our venue of choice was a breathtakingly stunning villa in the beautiful mountains of Sitges Barcelona. On the day of our wedding the sky was blue as far as the eye could see. It was a total dream come true and we adored every second of it.

The Wedding Planner.

Valerie O Donoghue was our wedding planner and she was absolutely incredible. An Irish girl that moved to Barcelona to follow her dreams as a wedding planner. It was complete random we found her as we just googled “wedding planner Sitges” and her name came up. When we met we instantly hit it off and she made all of our dreams possible. She has now become our friend and we visit her each time we return to Sitges on holidays.

Pros and Cons of a destination wedding.

The pros are that there is a totally different vibe from your wedding at home. All of your guests are in a holiday mood and I’m pretty sure you don’t have to worry about “the Irish weather “. For us there weren’t any cons! We had full faith in Valerie and the trips we had of flying to Barcelona for a long weekend to attend the food tasting and meeting the florist and photographer were beyond fun. It was very positive and I would do it all again tomorrow if I could.

Any Regrets?

Absolutely nothing! We planned for two years to have our dream wedding and our dream became a reality. We couldn’t have asked for more. It was magical and I felt like were in a movie.

Favourite Wedding Day Memory.

Walking down the aisle to a string quartet playing Kylie Minogue’s I believe In You. I was overcome with emotion and cried the entire way up until I reached the top of the isle where my soulmate and husband to be stood waiting for me.

Advice to couples getting married abroad.

Know exactly what you want, have a budget and stick to it. If you can afford a wedding planner then book one as it can make the experience so much easier and less stressful but if you can’t do your research and last but not least have a “pinch yourself moment” look around at your guests and take it all in! You are finally married.

Thank you so much to David and PJ for sharing their story with me.
